Artificial Attachment: Will a robot ever pass Ainsworth’s Strange Situation Test ?

چکیده

This paper builds bridges between robotics, psychology and ethology in order to define a kind of ”Turing test” that would constitute a possible aim for entertainment robotics. We argue that the design principles responsible for the success of existing artificial pet are not sufficient for building robots capable of a rewarding relationship with their owner. To achieve this goal, robots must display artificial attachment. Taking inspiration from the Ainsworth’s Strange Situation Test used in psychology and ethology, we describe an experimantal procedure to measure the attachment of a robot to its master. We then discuss how a robot can ever pass this test.

Saul McLeod John Bowlby (1969) believed that attachment was an all or nothing process. However, research has shown that there are individual differences in attachment quality. Indeed, one of the primary paradigms in attachment theory is that of the security of an individual’s attachment (Ainsworth & Bell, 1970). Much research in psychology has focused on how forms of attachment differ among inf...

Plastic machines: behavioural diversity and the Turing test

After proposing the Turing Test, Alan Turing himself considered a number of objections to the idea that a machine might eventually pass it. One of the objections discussed by Turing was that no machine will ever pass the Turing Test because no machine will ever “have as much diversity of behaviour as a man”. He responded as follows: the “criticism that a machine cannot have much diversity of be...

Attachment behavior in dogs (Canis familiaris): a new application of Ainsworth's (1969) Strange Situation Test.

Fifty-one owner-dog pairs were observed in a modified version of M. D. S. Ainsworth's (1969) Strange Situation Test. The results demonstrate that adult dogs (Canis familiaris) show patterns of attachment behavior toward the owner. Although there was considerable variability in dogs' attachment behavior to humans, the authors did not find any effect of gender, age, living conditions, or breed on...

Assessment of attachment behaviour to human caregivers in wolf pups (Canis lupus lupus).

Previous research suggested that 16-week old dog pups, but not wolf pups, show attachment behaviour to a human caregiver. Attachment to a caregiver in dog pups has been demonstrated by differential responding to a caregiver compared to a stranger in the Ainsworth Strange Situation Test. We show here that 3-7 week old wolf pups also show attachment-like behaviour to a human caregiver as measured...

Forming attachments in foster care: infant attachment behaviors during the first 2 months of placement.

This study investigated the development of attachment relationships in 38 foster infant-caregiver dyads over the first 2 months of placement. We used the Parent Attachment Diary to measure foster infants' daily attachment behaviors, the Adult Attachment Interview to examine foster parents' attachment states of mind, and Ainsworth's Strange Situation to capture attachment classifications. We exa...
